　Molly Malloneとは、17世紀にアイルランドのダブリンで魚介類の行商をしていた伝説的な少女の名前です。世界中のアイリッシュ・パブに、その名を残しています。私がMolly Malloneという名前を知ったのは、栄光学園中学3年生のときです。英語の授業で若いドイツ人神父のギュンター・ケルクマン先生が”Molly Mallone”という英語の歌を教えてくれました。歌詞やスペルはバリエーションがあるようです。

In Dublin’s fair city,
Where girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Mallone
As she wheeled her wheel barrow,
Through street broad and narrow,
Crying “Cockles and mussels alive, alive oh”

Alive, alive oh! alive, alive oh!

Now she was a fishmonger,
And sure was no wonder,
For so were her mother and father before.
And they each wheeled their barrow,

She died of a fever,
And nothing could save her,

　この歌は、アイルランドの国民的な歌になっているようです。スタンリー・キューブリック監督の「時計仕掛けのオレンジ」という映画がありましたが、その中で酔いどれの老人が歌を歌いながらテムズ河の河岸を歩いているシーンがあります。その歌が”Molly Mallone”です。

　モリー・マローンは、魚介類の行商をしていますが、両親も魚屋さんでした。いつも、「新鮮だよ！」と声を上げながら、行商の手押し車を押しています。彼女はあるとき高熱で死んでしまいます。しかし、モリー・マローンは、幽霊になっても、生前と同じように「新鮮だよ！」と言いながら行商をします。私はこの印象が強く残っていて、今でもときどき”Molly Mallone”を口ずさむことがあります。YouTubeでもSinead O’Connorの美声で”Molly Mallone”を聴くことができます。いつかダブリンを訪ねて、Molly Malloneの銅像を見物してから、ギネス・ビールを飲みたいと考えています。
